What is a nurse midwife?
Midwifery, a healthcare profession centered around pregnancy, childbirth, and the initial postpartum period, places a strong emphasis on providing a personalized and intimate experience for expectant individuals.
Many individuals choose to work with midwives due to their ability to offer a unique range of services, including the option of at-home births. Extensive research has demonstrated that those who receive midwife-led care often enjoy improved health outcomes, fewer medical interventions, and heightened levels of satisfaction.
In addition to private-practice settings that offer specialized services, midwives can be found working in various healthcare settings such as birthing centers, obstetrician and gynecologist offices, and hospitals.
Their responsibilities encompass delivering primary care to pregnant patients, conducting physical examinations, devising individualized patient care plans, and educating individuals about different birthing options.
What does a nurse midwife do?
A nurse midwife is a healthcare professional who specializes in providing comprehensive care to women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. They are trained to handle normal and low-risk pregnancies, assisting women in achieving a safe and fulfilling childbirth experience. Here are some key responsibilities and roles of a nurse midwife:

How to become a nurse midwife?
To become a nurse midwife, aspiring students must fulfill certified nurse midwife requirements and complete specific nurse midwife degree and educational pathways.
Individuals with a keen interest in pursuing a career as a nurse midwife must initially obtain a registered nurse (RN) license, which necessitates the completion of either an associate degree in nursing (ADN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) program.
While an ADN serves as the minimum requirement to become an RN, those aspiring for advanced nurse midwife positions must possess a BSN to pursue further educational opportunities. To become a certified nurse midwife (CNM), students can pursue a master of science in nursing (MSN) or a doctoral degree, as CNMs are considered advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs).
The following section outlines the duration of each degree program, outlines details regarding examinations, and delves into the licensing requirements necessary to embark on the journey to becoming a nurse midwife.
1- Earn a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree
A Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a four-year degree program that focuses on enhancing students' leadership abilities and provides a wider range of opportunities compared to an associate degree. Nonetheless, individuals who wish to expedite their entry into the nursing profession may find an associate degree in nursing (ADN) more appealing.
An ADN program typically requires two years of study and enables students to meet the requirements for a state nursing license. Those who already hold a bachelor's degree or possess college experience in another field might want to consider pursuing an accelerated BSN program, as it offers a faster route to obtaining a nurse midwife degree.
2- Obtain registered nurse (RN) licensure
After graduating from a BSN program, you need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to become a licensed RN. Check the requirements of your state's nursing board and fulfill any additional criteria for RN licensure.
If you need help with your nursing license exam preparation and nursing license fees, use an NCLEX study tool like Smart’n.
Smart’n is an innovative program that provides NextGen learning support for nursing students and helps them save time, stress less, and achieve success through personalized support.
Smart’n offers:
1- NextGen NCLEX preparation
This preparation includes 2500+ practice questions, next-generation (NGN) NCLEX-style case study practice, knowledge assessment, and progress tracking.
2- Scholarship grants for nursing students
The program aims to ease the financial burden of nursing students in two ways:
Every month, Smart'n gives a $300 grant to a member who responds to five questions in the grant application. They can participate in the program without having to pay any fees for membership. All that is required is for them to be in their final year of study at a licensed American nursing program.
It provides a $100 grant each week to a Smart'n member who is enrolled in a nursing program in North America. The goal of this scholarship is to assist nursing students in paying their educational costs, such as textbooks, lab fees, and other associated expenses.
3- Gain nursing experience
Many graduate-level nursing programs typically require prospective students to have 1-2 years of clinical experience prior to admission. This practical experience plays a crucial role in enhancing their applications, particularly for highly competitive graduate programs.
It is common for nurses to work as registered nurses (RNs) before embarking on their journey toward becoming certified nurse midwives (CNMs) and pursuing further licensure. This pre-existing nursing experience provides them with the authority and expertise required for advanced practice roles in midwifery.
During their RN tenure, nurses can also pursue additional midwife certifications that will equip them with the skills and knowledge relevant to their future roles as CNMs. For instance, they may obtain a neonatal intensive care nursing certification from the National Certification Corporation. This certification focuses on enhancing nurses' capabilities in caring for newborn infants. It typically necessitates at least one year of professional experience and successful completion of an examination.
4- Enroll in a graduate nursing midwifery program
Students interested in midwifery can complete their MSN degree in two years full-time or up to five years part-time. While an MSN is a minimum requirement for CNMs, students can pursue a DNP degree in 3-4 years or up to seven years part-time, allowing them to specialize in specific populations and issues.
5- Complete clinical training
Throughout your graduate program, you will engage in supervised clinical rotations in various settings, including hospitals, birthing centers, and clinics. These experiences will provide hands-on training in prenatal care, labor and delivery, postpartum care, and women's health.
6- Obtain certification
After completing your graduate program, you will need to become certified as a nurse midwife by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). The certification process involves passing the Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) examination.
What is the average certified nurse-midwife (CNM) salary?
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average salary for certified nurse midwives (CNMs) in the United States is $120,880 per year or $58.12 per hour.
Conclusion
Becoming a nurse midwife in 2023 presents an exciting and fulfilling career path for those passionate about women's health and childbirth. By following the outlined steps, including obtaining the necessary education, licensure, and certifications, aspiring individuals can embark on a journey to provide comprehensive care to expectant mothers and their families.
