Forensic nursing jobs allow you to merge your nursing skills with the complexities of the legal system.
What is a forensic nurse?
Forensic nurses are medical nurse practitioners with expertise in providing healthcare to individuals who have been subjected to violent crimes. Their main responsibilities include gathering evidence and presenting their findings in legal proceedings.
Usually, forensic nurse investigators operate in hospitals and anti-violence centers, where they support survivors. They may also be employed in medical examiner's or coroner's offices, where they collect evidence from deceased victims.
Forensic nurse examiners collaborate closely with courts and law enforcement agencies, handling delicate case information. Additionally, they may serve as patient advocates, assisting individuals in their recovery from traumatic injuries.
What does a forensic nurse do?
Forensic nurses carry out a range of responsibilities that can vary depending on their work environment and specific job requirements. Their duties typically encompass elements from both the criminal justice and nursing fields.
Here are some typical tasks that a forensic nurse may undertake:
Offering medical care to individuals who have been victimized by violent crimes.
Administering appropriate medications to manage patient pain.
Engaging in communication with patients and their family members.
Collaborating with law enforcement officials to discuss medical evidence relevant to their cases.

How to become a forensic nurse?
If you have a keen interest in becoming a forensic nurse, there are several viable routes you can choose from. The primary specializations in this field include sexual assault nurse examiners and custody nurses, although there may be specific demands for your skills and knowledge depending on your workplace.
Regardless of the specific path you want to pursue in forensic nursing, here are some forensic nurse education requirements and initial steps you can take to embark on a career in this field:
1- Decide if forensic nursing is the right career for you
In a profession involving the support and care of assault and trauma victims, it is crucial to possess emotional intelligence and prioritize mental well-being. It is essential to establish boundaries between work and personal life and cultivate other interests that contribute to self-care when working in such a field.
2- Earn your nursing degree
Typically, to pursue a career as a forensic nurse and become a registered nurse (RN), it is generally recommended to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited program. This nursing degree typically requires four years of study.
Alternatively, you have the option of earning an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), which can be completed in two years. However, it's important to note that some employers may prefer candidates with a bachelor's degree. Therefore, even though an ADN takes less time to complete, it may take longer to transition into the field of forensic nursing without a BSN.
3- Get licensed as a registered nurse (RN)
After completing your nursing program, you will be required to successfully pass the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). The NCLEX is a standardized exam conducted across the United States and Canada to grant nursing licensure.
Once you pass this examination, you can start applying for your initial nursing position. It's worth noting that there has been a recent update to the NCLEX, and nursing graduates can anticipate taking the Next Gen NCLEX (NGN) version.
If you need help with your nursing license fees and preparation, use an NCLEX study tool like Smart’n. Smart’n offers:
1- NextGen NCLEX preparation
This preparation includes 2500+ practice questions, next-generation (NGN) NCLEX-style case study practice, knowledge assessment, and progress tracking.
2- Scholarship grants for nursing students
The program aims to ease the financial burden of nursing students in two ways:
Every month, Smart'n gives a $300 grant to a member who responds to five questions in the grant application. They can participate in the program without having to pay any fees for membership. All that is required is for them to be in their final year of study at a licensed American nursing program.
It provides a $100 grant each week to a Smart'n member who is enrolled in a nursing program in North America. The goal of this scholarship is to assist nursing students in paying their educational costs, such as textbooks, lab fees, and other associated expenses.
4- Gain experience in the field
In order to pursue a career as a forensic nurse, it is necessary to acquire a minimum of three years of experience as a registered nurse. It is advisable to request assignments from your employer that involve sensitive cases, as this will allow you to gain valuable forensic experience.
These assignments could involve assisting women's health physicians, providing care to patients who are victims of crimes, or managing cases involving traumatic or violent injuries. Such experience will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge for handling various cases encountered in the field of forensic nursing.
5- Complete provider-specific training
Once you have completed your education and gained three years of experience in the field, the next step in your journey may involve seeking a provider who is willing to offer specialized training for your specific role.
The level of supervision and the duration of this training can vary depending on the requirements of your workplace. However, as a newly appointed Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) or Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), it is typical to undergo a period of supervised practice.
During this continued education period under the guidance of a qualified FNE, you can expect to acquire additional skills in the following areas:
Providing treatment for minor injuries
Assessing the mental health of patients and evaluating suicide risk
Conducting clinical examination procedures
Performing physical assessments
Addressing sexual health concerns
Ensuring the safety and protection of individuals
6- Obtain certification
Pursue certification as a forensic nurse through organizations such as the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) or the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC). Certification can demonstrate your expertise and enhance your professional credibility.
7- Pursue post-graduate studies
Engaging in post-graduate studies, while not mandatory, can significantly enhance your career and skills as a forensic nurse. Presently, Staffordshire University is the sole program endorsed by the UK Association of Forensic Nurses and Paramedics (UKAFN) for postgraduate training. If you wish to pursue a diploma, postgraduate certificate, or Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Forensic Practice, exploring the offerings within this institution can be a valuable step towards advancing your career. Staffordshire University currently provides two specialized streams: custody and sexual offenses. Upon successfully completing the program, you will be awarded the Advanced Standards in Education and Training (ASET) certificate by UKAFN.
Post-graduate studies enable you to expand your clinical knowledge and gain valuable experience in various areas, including crime scene investigation, forensic science, legal skills, and mock court trials. These studies can greatly contribute to your professional development and provide you with comprehensive expertise in the field of forensic nursing.

Strong written and oral communication skills are essential for forensic nurses. These skills are necessary for writing reports, effectively communicating with patients, conveying important information to law enforcement, patients' families, and presenting information accurately in court.
5- Attention to detail
Attention to detail is critical in forensic nursing. The evidence collected by forensic nurses can play a significant role in the outcome of patients' cases. Skills such as sample collection, medical photography, evidence extraction, and residue identification require training, focus, and a meticulous approach to ensure no important details are overlooked.
6- Confidentiality
Maintaining confidentiality and being trustworthy are vital aspects of the role of a forensic nurse. Since they often deal with sensitive cases, patients must feel secure knowing that their forensic nurse is reliable and will handle their information confidentially. Establishing trust is crucial in fostering an effective nurse-patient relationship.
Conclusion
In conclusion, embarking on the journey to becoming a forensic nurse is an exciting and rewarding path for those passionate about combining healthcare and justice. By following the necessary steps, including obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), gaining experience as a registered nurse, and pursuing specialized training, aspiring forensic nurses can develop the skills and knowledge required for this unique field. While the road may require dedication and further education, the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of survivors and contribute to the legal system is worth the effort.
