What is a trauma nurse?
Trauma nurses specialize in providing care to individuals with severe injuries that are often life-threatening. They are among the frontline responders in the emergency department (ED) who attend to patients who have experienced traumatic injuries, such as those resulting from accidents, violence, or natural disasters.
Typically stationed in the critical section of the ED, trauma nurses are well-equipped to handle individuals brought in through emergency transport. They collaborate closely with emergency services teams, ED doctors, trauma surgeons, and various other healthcare professionals. Their primary objective is to stabilize patients and enhance their chances of survival while striving for the most favorable outcome.
What does a trauma nurse do?
Trauma nurses play a critical role in delivering urgent and life-saving care to patients in immediate need. They must possess the ability to make prompt and informed decisions. They evaluate each patient's condition and prioritize their treatment based on the severity of their injuries.
These nurses often find themselves attending to multiple patients with diverse injuries simultaneously. Their primary responsibilities encompass:
Promptly identifying patients requiring immediate assistance.
Stabilizing patients' conditions.
Acting as a bridge between patients, their families, and advanced medical personnel.
Collaborating with first responders.
Providing wound care.
Offering patient education.
Maintaining accurate documentation.
Assisting with post mortem care.
Furthermore, trauma nurses are expected to utilize medical equipment to improve patients' conditions and increase their chances of survival. They perform life-saving procedures such as CPR, employ defibrillators to control heart function, initiate intravenous lines (IVs), and administer vital medications and fluids like epinephrine, atropine, adenosine, magnesium sulfate, sodium bicarbonate, and normal saline.
How to become a trauma nurse?
Becoming a certified trauma nurse requires following several important steps. The following list will outline each step's significance in your career seeking process:
1- Complete a registered nursing program
To become a registered nurse, there are several educational pathways you can choose from. Here are the options and their importance in your nursing job:
Enroll in a registered nursing program and graduate. You have three choices when it comes to nursing programs:
Diploma nursing program
This program, offered by hospitals or specific schools, provides the education needed to become a registered nurse and prepares you for the NCLEX-RN exam.
Two-year nursing program (ADN/ASN)
These programs award an Associate Degree in Nursing or Associate's of Science in Nursing. Upon completion, you become a registered nurse and can take the NCLEX-RN exam.
Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) program
Offered at universities or colleges, this program provides a comprehensive four-year education in nursing.
Graduating from an accredited nursing program is crucial for becoming a registered nurse and being eligible to take the NCLEX-RN exam.
Consider the importance of a BSN. Many hospitals strive to attain magnet status, which often leads to a preference for hiring nurses with a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. A BSN can provide you with a broader knowledge base, increased skills, and exposure to a range of roles and procedures.
Seek tuition reimbursement or part-time study options: If you currently hold a diploma or associate degree, it's worthwhile to inquire whether your hospital or clinical setting offers tuition reimbursement for pursuing a BSN. Alternatively, you can consider completing BSN courses part-time while working.
Completing a BSN program or upgrading your nursing credentials can open up more opportunities for career advancement and increase your chances of securing employment in desirable healthcare settings.
Remember to research and choose an accredited nursing program that aligns with your goals, and stay updated on any specific requirements or preferences in your desired area of practice.
2- Pass the NCLEX
After completing your studies, it is necessary to undertake the RN licensing exam, commonly referred to as the NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination). This nationwide test is administered in the United States and Canada to qualify nurses for licensure. Successfully clearing the NCLEX allows you to pursue your initial nursing position by submitting your application.
If you are looking for help in the process of preparing for your NCLEX exam, use an NCLEX study tool like Smart’n.
An effective strategy for approaching nursing case studies is to utilize Smart'n, an innovative platform aimed at assisting nursing students in their academic endeavors. Smart'n offers a comprehensive range of resources including practice questions, explanations, and assessments, specifically tailored to support the learning process.
With a vast collection of over 2,500 practice questions and more than 60 hours of NGN NCLEX-style different nursing case study types, Smart'n provides students with access to concise and well-organized NextGen questions and case studies categorized by topic. This feature enables students to concentrate on specific areas of nursing practice, such as respiratory, cardiac, mental health, neurological, and various other disciplines.
3- Complete necessary work experience
The Board of Certification for Emergency suggests that it is beneficial to possess two years of experience in your specific field before attempting the Trauma Certified Registered Nurse Certification exam. However, this experience is not mandatory. During this duration, you have the opportunity to acquire valuable expertise. This period allows you to explore various types of emergency healthcare settings that you may prefer working in, including:
Emergency rooms
Trauma centers
Critical care units
Ambulance services
Flight transport services
4- Obtain trauma nurse certification
Once you have gained sufficient experience, it is worth considering obtaining a certification in trauma nursing. The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN) recognizes TCRNs as professionals who work across various aspects of trauma care and aim to demonstrate their expertise and knowledge in this field. To be eligible for the exam, the following requirements must be met:
Possess a current and unrestricted registered nurse license in the United States or its territories.
Have at least two years of experience in your specialty area (though it is highly recommended by BCEN, it is not mandatory).
After successfully passing the exam, your certification will be valid for a duration of four years. To ensure the maintenance of your certification, it is necessary to stay updated and participate in continuing education programs.
5- Complete trauma nursing courses
Once you have successfully passed the certification exam and obtained your certification, you have the opportunity to engage in ongoing professional development through continuing education courses focused on emergency medicine and trauma. The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) offers a range of courses in these areas. You can enroll in these courses through organizations like the emergency nursing association, allowing you to enhance your knowledge and skills in emergency medicine and trauma care.
6- Earn additional certifications
Having certifications is highly beneficial for registered nurses, especially those specializing in trauma care. Many hospitals may mandate certifications after a certain period of experience in emergency rooms (ER) or critical care units. Possessing certifications also enhances your desirability as a candidate when seeking new job opportunities. Additional certifications that can be pursued in this field include the Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) and the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) certification.
