In this article, we will explore the process of becoming a SANE in 2023 and discuss the salary prospects in this important field.
What is a sexual assault nurse examiner?
A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner, commonly known as a SANE nurse, is a registered nurse who specializes in providing compassionate and comprehensive care to individuals who have experienced sexual assault or abuse. SANE nursing is among the most important nursing jobs, as it plays a critical role in the healthcare system by providing trauma-informed care, collecting forensic evidence, and supporting survivors throughout their healing process.
The role of a SANE nurse is vital in addressing the unique needs of sexual assault survivors. SANEs are trained to provide medical care while ensuring the preservation and collection of forensic evidence, which is crucial for criminal investigations. They offer support and guidance to survivors during what can be an incredibly traumatic and challenging time, helping them regain a sense of control over their lives.
How to become a SANE nurse?
To become a SANE nurse, individuals typically need to meet specific education and training requirements. Please note that SANE nurse requirements may vary depending on the country and jurisdiction. The following information provides a general overview of the typical requirements and steps for becoming a nurse as a SANE:
1. Get a nursing degree:
The first step is to become a registered nurse (RN). This typically involves completing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program from an accredited nursing school.
2. Get RN licensure:
After completing a nursing program, you'll need to pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to obtain your RN license. This nursing license exam ensures that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to practice nursing safely and effectively.

Organizations such as the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) offer SANE certification programs for different types of SANEs, such as Adult/ Adolescent SANE, Pediatric SANE, or SANE-P (for patients who are pregnant or postpartum).
6. Gain clinical competencies:
In addition to education and certification, gaining clinical competencies is essential. This involves supervised clinical practice where you work under the guidance of experienced SANE certified nurses to develop the necessary skills in providing compassionate and comprehensive care to sexual assault survivors.
It's important to note that the specific requirements and processes can vary by jurisdiction, and it's recommended to research the requirements of the specific area where you plan to practice as a SANE.
