1- Complete your vet nurse schooling education or obtain a GED
Focus on science and math courses as they are essential in the veterinary field for tasks like administering medicine dosages and animal measurements.
2- Gain experience
Gain early experience with animals to understand if veterinary nursing is the right career path for you. Volunteering at a veterinarian clinic, local animal shelter, or kennel can be helpful in this regard.
3- Attend a nursing program
Enroll in a veterinary nursing program offered by a college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). These programs can lead to either a two-year veterinary nurse degree, qualifying you as a veterinary technician, or a four-year degree, making you a veterinary technologist. The courses cover a wide range of subjects, such as medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and preventive health care.
4- Check the licensing requirements
Check the licensing requirements for your state, as most veterinary nurse positions mandate licensure. Make sure you prepare to obtain the necessary license to practice as a veterinary nurse.
5- Earn a related certification
Consider earning a related certification in animal studies, veterinary nursing, or a related field to enhance your expertise and make yourself more attractive to potential employers. These certificates can often be completed online and typically take less than a year to finish.
