What is a public health nurse?
A public health nurse plays a vital role in advocating for and safeguarding the well-being of communities, emphasizing disease prevention, health education, and collaborative efforts with other healthcare practitioners. Instead of concentrating on immediate healthcare needs, public health nurses prioritize long-term health, safety, and strategies to prevent illnesses while enhancing a community's healthcare accessibility.
They may engage directly with individuals to conduct health screenings or contribute to the operations of community health clinics. Public health nurses predominantly serve disadvantaged and marginalized populations, both in the United States and globally, aiming to address health disparities and promote equity in healthcare.
What do public health nurses do?
Public Health Nurses play a crucial role in preventing, educating, advocating, assessing, and evaluating public health initiatives. They work towards disease prevention, ensuring public safety, and promoting well-being. Additionally, they provide education on health issues and support other healthcare professionals in their work.
The responsibilities of a public health nurse include:
Assessing health trends in communities to identify specific risk factors
Prioritizing health interventions for maximum impact
Advocating for improved access to healthcare services in underserved communities through engagement with local, state, and federal authorities
Designing and implementing health education campaigns and activities for disease prevention
Providing information about local health programs and services to enhance access to care
Offering direct healthcare services to at-risk populations
Educating and providing healthcare services to vulnerable and at-risk populations
Collaborating with other healthcare professionals
Where do public health nurses work?
Effective communication is a key skill for public health nurses as they engage in educating the public and collaborating with fellow healthcare practitioners. These professionals have the flexibility to work in various settings, including community health clinics, research organizations, outpatient clinics, government agencies, international health agencies, nonprofit organizations, Veteran's Affairs offices, home health agencies, the U.S. Military, hospitals, and academia.
Public health nurses often have variable working hours that depend on the needs of the population they serve. During public health crises and immediate aftermaths, they may be required to work additional hours to address the situation effectively.
How to become a public health nurse?
Becoming a public health nurse involves several steps and needs public health nurse degrees and public health nurse qualifications. Here's a general guide on how to pursue a career as a public health nurse:
1- Attend an accredited nursing program
To become a public health nurse, start by earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an accredited nursing program. While it is possible to become a nurse through either an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or BSN program, obtaining a bachelor's degree is necessary to pursue certification in public health nursing.
To gain admission to a nursing program, you must fulfill prerequisite requirements in health science courses such as anatomy and physiology, biology, nutrition, biomedical statistics, and chemistry. The specific prerequisites may vary by institution, and some schools may have a minimum GPA requirement, often around 3.0 or higher.
Additionally, most nursing programs require you to take an entrance exam such as the Test of Academic Skills (TEAS) or Kaplan Nursing School Admissions test. Some universities may also request letters of recommendation, CPR certification, a written career statement explaining your motivation for pursuing nursing school, and a face-to-face interview as part of the application process.
2- Pass the NCLEX
Now you'll need to pass the national licensing examination to become a registered nurse. So upon earning your nursing degree, you will need to become licensed to practice as an RN. The specific licensing requirements may vary depending on your country or state.
The abbreviation NCLEX-RN represents the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse. This standardized test is administered nationwide in the United States to grant nursing licensure. The exam evaluates whether you possess the necessary clinical knowledge, critical thinking abilities, and skills required to begin your career as a registered nurse.
If you want to get ready for your nursing license exam, you can use an NCLEX study tool like Smart’n.
Smart’n is an innovative program that provides NextGen learning support for nursing students and helps them save time, stress less, and achieve success through personalized support.
Smart’n offers:
1- NextGen NCLEX preparation
This preparation includes 2500+ practice questions, next-generation (NGN) NCLEX-style case study practice, knowledge assessment, and progress tracking.
2- Scholarship grants for nursing students
The program aims to ease the financial burden of nursing students in two ways:
Every month, Smart'n gives a $300 grant to a member who responds to five questions in the grant application. They can participate in the program without having to pay any fees for membership. All that is required is for them to be in their final year of study at a licensed American nursing program.
It provides a $100 grant each week to a Smart'n member who is enrolled in a nursing program in North America. The goal of this scholarship is to assist nursing students in paying their educational costs, such as textbooks, lab fees, and other associated expenses.
3- Gain RN experience
While it is possible to pursue a Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree immediately after completing a Bachelor's degree in nursing, it is often beneficial to gain some experience as a registered nurse (RN) first.
However, the decision ultimately depends on your personal preference and the specific requirements of the MSN program you plan to enroll in. For instance, if your goal is to focus more on research and less on clinical practice, it might be suitable to directly enter a full-time MSN program.
If you choose to gain experience before pursuing a graduate-level program or wish to work as an RN while pursuing your degree, it is advisable to seek positions in outpatient clinics, community clinics, or school systems. This will demonstrate your dedication to areas related to public health, which can be advantageous when seeking more advanced roles in the future.
4- Get certification in public health nursing
There is currently a single certification available for individuals in the field of public health nursing, known as the Certified Public Health certification.
This certification is designed for individuals who wish to obtain certification in public health, and it is not exclusive to nurses. To be eligible for this certification, individuals must meet specific criteria, which include:
Holding at least a bachelor's degree in any discipline, along with a minimum of five years of subsequent work experience in public health, OR
Possessing a relevant graduate-level degree, in addition to a minimum of three years of subsequent work experience in public health, OR
Having a certificate from a school or program of public health that is accredited by or in applicant status with the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), along with a minimum of three years of subsequent work experience in public health.
These criteria outline the requirements for individuals who wish to pursue the Certified Public Health certification, allowing them to demonstrate their expertise and experience in the field of public health.
Public health nurse salary

It is important to recognize that these salary figures primarily apply to Public Health Nurses who are more focused on clinical responsibilities, such as providing patient care and education in community health clinics.
To pursue advanced leadership, administrative, or research positions, such as Director of a City Health Department or Infection Preventionist, it is likely that you will need to gain experience in a broader Public Health role and/or obtain an advanced degree.
