If you have a passion for women's health, a deep sense of empathy, and an eagerness to make a positive impact in the lives of others by becoming a nurse, then pursuing a career as an obgyn nurse might be the perfect fit for you.
In this blog, we will delve into the exciting world of obgyn nursing and provide you with valuable insights and guidance on how to begin this fulfilling career journey. We will explore the obgyn nurse schooling educational requirements, essential skills, and personal qualities needed to excel in this field.
What is an obgyn nurse?
Obgyn nurses collaborate with obstetricians, gynecologist nurses, and midwives to promote reproductive health, focusing on pregnancy and childbirth. Although their primary work setting is often hospitals and healthcare systems, they also frequently find employment in independent obgyn practices and standalone birthing centers.
In their role, RN obgyn nurses aid physicians and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), offering patient education, administering prescribed medications, and delivering other treatments. Their valuable contributions contribute to the prevention of maternal and infant illness and mortality, ensuring that newborns have a healthy beginning to life.
What does an Obgyn nurse do?
Obgyn nurses specialize in either obstetrics or gynecology, focusing on one branch of medicine. Obstetrics primarily involves pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, while gynecology centers around the reproductive system of female-bodied patients throughout their adult lives.
In their role, obgyn nurses are responsible for providing sexual and reproductive healthcare to patients with specific anatomical features, including a cervix, endometrium, fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, and vagina.
While their specific duties may vary depending on the workplace, many OB registered nurses assist obstetricians and midwives during labor and delivery. However, their scope of practice extends to encompass comprehensive care during pregnancy, the postpartum period, and overall reproductive and sexual health starting from puberty.
The responsibilities of obgyn nurses encompass patient education, preventative care, and urgent care. They educate patients on topics such as birth control, fertility treatments, healthy pregnancy, and newborn care. They also conduct screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), monitor vital signs, collect samples, and assist with pelvic exams and prenatal screenings.
OB nurses can be employed in various healthcare settings that specialize in the care of female-bodied patients. These may include private obgyn clinics, hospital maternity wards, birthing centers, family planning clinics, community health centers, and even the armed forces.
Typically, OB nurses work under the supervision of obgyn doctors or nurse midwives. However, those who pursue advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) roles may have the opportunity to practice independently in some states.
How to become an obgyn nurse?
Becoming an obgyn nurse requires a specific educational pathway and a dedication to women's healthcare. Here are the general steps to pursue a career as an OB/GYN nurse:
1- Earn a nursing degree
There are three main paths to becoming a registered nurse (RN): a diploma program, an associate degree in nursing (ADN), or a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN).
Diploma programs are usually offered by hospitals, while ADN and BSN programs are available at colleges and universities. Pursuing a BSN is highly recommended, as it provides a more comprehensive education and better career prospects.
2- Pass the NCLEX to receive RN licensure
After completing your nursing degree, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to become a licensed registered nurse. The exam assesses your knowledge and competency in providing safe and effective nursing care.
If you are looking for an NCLEX study tool to help you with your nursing license exam preparation and nursing license exam fees, use Smart’n.
Smart’n is an innovative program that provides NextGen learning support for nursing students and helps them save time, stress less, and achieve success through personalized support.
Smart’n offers:
1- NextGen NCLEX preparation
This preparation includes 2500+ practice questions, next-generation (NGN) NCLEX-style nursing case study practice, knowledge assessment, and progress tracking.
2- Scholarship grants for nursing students
The scholarship grant aims to ease the financial burden of nursing students in two ways:
Every month, Smart'n gives a $300 grant to a member who responds to five questions in the grant application. They can participate in the program without having to pay any fees for membership. All that is required is to be in their final year of study at a licensed American nursing program.
It provides a $100 grant each week to a Smart'n member who is enrolled in a nursing program in North America. The goal of this scholarship is to assist nursing students in paying their educational costs, such as textbooks, lab fees, and other associated expenses.
3- Gain experience in obstetrics or gynecology
Recent college graduates can seek employment in various OB/GYN environments, such as hospitals, health systems, independent practices, standalone practices, clinics, and other healthcare facilities. Starting positions in the field of OB/GYN involve comprehensive hands-on training and educational experiences. This specialization will give you exposure to the unique aspects of caring for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and reproductive health.
4- Obtain certification
You can obtain certifications that validate your expertise and understanding in the field. The widely recognized certification for OB/GYN nurses is the Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB)® credential offered by the National Certification Commission (NCC).
To be eligible for the certification exam, aspiring RNC-OB candidates must have at least two years of relevant experience, equating to 2,000 hours. Additionally, OB nurses can pursue NCC certifications in various other specialties, including maternal newborn nursing, obstetric and neonatal quality and safety, electronic fetal monitoring, and neonatal intensive care nursing.
5- Consider advancing your education
Advancing your education as a nurse opens up opportunities for career advancement and can boost your earning potential. For nurses who do not have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), pursuing an RN-to-BSN bridge program is a logical next step. These programs cater to registered nurses (RNs) who aim to enhance their skills and job prospects, often offering flexible part-time or online formats to accommodate the schedules of working nurses.
For nurses already holding a BSN, pursuing a graduate nursing degree can lead to advanced practice and leadership roles. Obtaining a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree can qualify nurses for advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) positions, such as nurse midwives or women's health nurse practitioners.
To maintain licensure in most states, nurses must participate in continuing education. Various organizations, including AWHONN (Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses), offer valuable resources for continuing education.
Obgyn nurse salary
Nurses generally experience consistent demand for their skills and receive competitive salaries. Based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), registered nurses (including OB nurses) earned a median yearly income of $77,600 in 2021, which is over $30,000 higher than the median salary across all occupations. The BLS predicts a 6% growth rate in RN employment from 2021 to 2031, aligning with the national average.
Conclusion
In conclusion, pursuing a career as an OB/GYN nurse in 2023 presents promising opportunities for both personal and professional growth. By following the necessary steps, including obtaining a nursing degree, gaining experience, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology, and considering optional certifications, individuals can embark on a fulfilling journey in this specialized field of nursing. Not only can OB/GYN nursing provide the satisfaction of caring for women's health needs, but it also offers competitive salaries.
