Nursing and medical school are both healthcare careers that aim to provide life-saving care to those in need. Both students work towards leading lives of service, but each has its own nuances, benefits, and drawbacks.
The choice between nursing and medical school depends on a student's ultimate career goal and interests.
This article discusses the differences between nursing and medical school, including schooling differences, financial considerations, work expectations, and the benefits of each.
Nursing school Vs medical school
Nursing and medical programs share similarities but also have notable differences. One key distinction is in the career options and testing requirements.
Medical students must complete the MCAT as undergraduates before applying to medical schools, while nursing students don't have to take additional admissions tests once they enroll in undergraduate schooling.

Education and timeline in nursing school Vs medical school
A nursing program can get you into a medical career faster. You can start working as a nurse in just two to three years by getting an associate degree or completing a hospital's nursing diploma program.
While a higher degree is not always necessary, many new nurses now have a Bachelor of Science in nursing or a similar degree.
On the other hand, becoming a doctor takes more time. Medical school students need four more years after earning a bachelor's degree.
The first two years involve classroom learning, and the next two include hands-on training. These training years prepare students for the final phase: a residency program lasting three to seven years, where they work in a hospital under the guidance of experienced medical professionals.
Classes in nursing school Vs medical school
Nursing degree programs share some classes with other undergraduate degrees, especially those for students aiming for medical school. In nursing school, there's a focus on natural science in the early years.
The later semesters concentrate on nursing education, covering general practices and care for specific patient groups.
In medical school, students take advanced classes in biochemistry, anatomy, pathology, pharmacology, and microbiology. These subjects lay the technical foundation for medical studies applied during clinical education.
While some schools follow a traditional schedule with multiple courses each week, others use a direct approach, allowing students to focus on one subject exclusively during the entire week.
Program cost in nursing school Vs medical school
In simple terms, going to medical school is usually more expensive than going to nursing school. Medical school takes more time and requires more tuition money because it involves more years of education.
Also, the cost of tuition in medical school is usually higher than in undergraduate programs. Since medical school demands a lot of time and dedication, it's challenging for students to work full-time jobs while attending school.
Nursing and medical job salary
The main difference between doctors and nurses is their salary. General doctors earn around $160,000 per year, while surgery and emergency room doctors make about $240,000 annually.
Nurses have different salary levels within the profession. Registered nurses earn an average of $57,000 per year, staff nurses earn around $39,000 annually, and advanced practice nurses make higher salaries, averaging $157,000 annually.
Both nursing school and medical school offer students the chance to provide quality healthcare. The decision to attend either medical school or nursing school is a personal one, and both are considered good choices.
Work environments after nursing school Vs medical school
Nursing and medical school graduates often work together in healthcare facilities, but their roles and working environments can vary. Nurses typically spend more time with patients, conducting tests, providing care, and addressing questions. They may specialize in a specific area of a hospital.
Doctors, on the other hand, tend to move quickly between patients, collaborating with nurses during assessments and leaving instructions for treatment or testing before moving on to the next patient or an office.
