Tips for passing the nursing license exam
1. Understand the format of the exam
The nursing license exam, also known as the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for registered nurses), is a standardized test to assess a nurse's competency and readiness to enter the nursing profession.
The exam is computer-adaptive, meaning the difficulty level of each question is based on the test-taker’s previous answers. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions, with some questions requiring the test-taker to select multiple correct answers.
To prepare for the format of the exam, it's important to have an NCLEX study guide to become familiar with the types of questions that will be asked. Reviewing practice questions and taking mock exams can help you become comfortable with the format of the exam and the types of questions you will encounter.
Using Smart’n, you can access 2,500+ NCLEX practice questions (including NextGen) and concise rationales. It also allows you to practice and assess your critical thinking and clinical judgment via NGN NCLEX-style nursing case study practice, track your progress, and analyze your knowledge in each step. By becoming familiar with the format and types of questions, you can focus your studying on the areas where you need the most improvement.
It's also important to become familiar with the exam's time limits and pacing. You should develop a strategy using NCLEX study tips for managing your time during the exam, which may involve skipping difficult questions and returning to them later.
Understanding the exam format can help reduce anxiety and build confidence, both critical components of success on test day.
2. Create a study plan
To pass nursing exam, you must create a plan or NCLEX study calendar that emphasizes studying regularly and consistently. One tip for developing a study schedule is to break down your study sessions into manageable chunks, such as studying for an hour each day. You can also use a planner or calendar to schedule specific study times and hold yourself accountable.
In addition to creating a study schedule, it's also important to use effective study techniques that maximize your learning. This can include active studying methods such as practicing with flashcards, taking practice exams, and reviewing class notes. You may also want to try studying in different locations or using different study materials to keep your studying fresh and engaging. Remember, consistency and effectiveness are key to passing the nursing license exam in 2023.
3. Practice time management
One important tip for passing the nursing exam is to practice time management. Effective time management during the exam can help you stay calm and focused and avoid running out of time before completing all the questions. Here are some tips on how to manage your time during the exam:
Pacing yourself
Read the instructions and each question carefully, and try to answer each question in a reasonable amount of time. Avoid spending too much time on difficult questions or getting stuck on one question.
Prioritizing questions
If you encounter a question you are unsure of, mark it and move on. Focus on answering the easier questions first, and come back to the more difficult ones later.
Time check
Keep an eye on the time and pace yourself accordingly. Set time goals for each section of the exam and try to stay on track.
Taking practice tests in a timed environment can help you practice pacing yourself and managing your time during the actual exam.
4. Utilize study resources
Utilizing study resources is a great tip for passing the nursing licensure exam, as it can provide numerous benefits, such as:
Supplementing your knowledge: Study resources can provide additional information and explanations that may not have been covered in your coursework, helping you gain a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.
Reinforcing key concepts: Practice questions and other review materials can help you reinforce key concepts and better prepare you for the exam.
Saving time: Using study resources can help you study more efficiently and effectively, allowing you to cover more material in less time.
To effectively find study resources, start by researching reputable sources such as study guides, review books, and online resources from accredited nursing organizations. Look for resources that align with the exam's content outline and format to ensure you're studying the right material. Consider asking your instructors or peers for recommendations on study resources as well.
Once you have identified study resources, create a plan to use them effectively. Start by setting aside specific study times to work through the materials. Don't be afraid to ask for help if you need clarification on any topics or concepts.
5. Collaborate with peers and mentors
One of the most effective tips for passing the nursing board exam is to collaborate with peers and mentors. Studying with others who are also preparing for the exam can have several benefits. It can help you see things from different perspectives, exposing you to new ideas and approaches to studying. Collaboration can help you learn from others and improve your understanding of the material.
Mentors, as well, can offer guidance and support, providing valuable insights into what to expect on the exam and how to manage stress and anxiety. They can also provide valuable feedback on your progress and help you identify areas where you may need to focus more attention.
To find study groups or mentors in your field, start by reaching out to your classmates. They are likely going through the same process as you. You can also ask your professors or academic advisors for recommendations on finding a mentor or joining a study group. Additionally, there are online resources, such as nursing forums and social media groups, where you can connect with other nursing students and professionals.
6. Identify weaknesses and focus on improvement
Identifying weaknesses and strengths is essential to prepare for any examination, especially the nursing license exam. Understanding what areas you need to improve on and what you excel at can significantly impact your overall exam performance. It allows you to tailor your study plan to address your weaknesses and enhance your strengths.
To identify your weaknesses and strengths, review your previous exam results and evaluate your performance in each topic area. You can also take online practice tests or seek feedback from your instructors or peers. By using Smart’n, each time you answer questions and quizzes, you can see the areas that need more work and areas that you excel in.
Once you have identified your areas of weakness, create a study plan that focuses on improving your knowledge in those areas.
To improve your weaknesses, practice questions related to those areas. Look for resources that provide detailed explanations and examples to help you better understand the concepts. Additionally, take advantage of any tutoring services or study groups offered by your nursing school or local nursing associations. These resources can provide additional support and guidance as you prepare for the exam.
7. Utilize test-taking strategies
Effective test-taking strategies can help you approach exam questions more confidently and improve your overall performance. One tip is to carefully read each question and all of the answer options before selecting an answer. Often, there are keywords or phrases in the question stem that can help you identify the correct answer.
Another common test-taking strategy is to use the process of elimination. This involves eliminating the answer choices that are clearly incorrect, leaving you with a smaller set of options to choose from. Additionally, suppose you are unsure of the answer. In that case, you can use educated guesses by eliminating the choices you know are incorrect and making an educated guess based on your knowledge of the topic.
To implement these test-taking strategies during the exam, make sure to take your time and read each question carefully. Don't rush through the exam or second-guess yourself. If you are unsure of an answer, mark it and move on to the next question. This allows you to maximize your time and increase your chances of answering all the questions.
8. Take practice exams
Practice and implement the test-taking strategies in your study sessions. Take practice exams, such as Smart’n’s, and use the strategies to identify your areas of weakness and improve your overall performance.
As it was mentioned before, taking practice exams for your NCLEX license can help you identify areas where you may need more study time, familiarize yourself with the types of questions you'll encounter, and build your confidence before taking the actual exam.
When taking practice exams, simulate the actual testing conditions as much as possible. This means taking the exam in a quiet, distraction-free environment and timing yourself to simulate the real exam conditions.
Additionally, take breaks at the same intervals as the actual exam to help build your endurance. After completing each practice exam, review the results and identify areas you need to improve. Focus on these areas in your subsequent study sessions and continue taking practice exams to monitor your progress.
9. Stay motivated and confident
The nursing license exam is a crucial step in becoming a licensed nurse, and it requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and preparation. Staying motivated and confident throughout the studying process is crucial as it can impact the outcome of the exam.
Here are some tips on how to maintain motivation and confidence:

Celebrate your achievements, no matter how small they may seem. Celebrating progress can give you a sense of accomplishment and help you stay motivated.
Stay positive
A positive attitude can go a long way in improving your performance during the exam. Try to stay optimistic and avoid negative self-talk. Focus on your strengths and achievements, and believe in yourself.

To think like the test creator, familiarize yourself with the exam format, content, and question types. This includes reviewing sample questions, studying the exam blueprint, and understanding the weighting of different content areas. By doing this, you can identify the areas where you need to focus your studying and prepare accordingly.
You should also pay attention to the wording and structure of the questions, as well as the answer choices. This can help you identify the correct answer and avoid being tricked by misleading answer choices.

Getting adequate rest and nutrition is crucial for nursing students preparing for the nursing licensure exam as it significantly impacts exam performance. Adequate sleep and proper nutrition help to improve concentration, cognitive functioning, and memory recall, all of which are essential for success in the exam.
Lack of sleep and poor nutrition can lead to fatigue, decreased alertness, and impaired decision-making ability, which can negatively affect exam performance. When the body is deprived of essential nutrients, it can result in a lack of energy, headaches, and a weakened immune system.
To improve rest and nutrition habits, develop a sleep routine, plan meals ahead of time, stay hydrated, avoid skipping meals, and take breaks. This can help you improve cognitive functioning, concentration, and memory recall, leading to better exam performance.

To manage test anxiety, there are several strategies that may be helpful, including practicing relaxation techniques, staying organized, getting enough sleep, eating a healthy diet, exercising, taking breaks, and using positive self-talk. In addition, resources are available for managing test anxiety, such as counseling services, self-help books, and online resources.
Nursing candidates can better prepare for and perform on the NCLEX license exam by managing test anxiety.
14. Use critical thinking and decision-making skills
When preparing for the nursing license exam, you need to have critical thinking and decision-making skills. As a nurse, you will be required to make important decisions that could potentially affect the lives of your patients. Therefore, it is essential to have well-developed critical thinking skills to analyze situations, identify problems, and come up with effective solutions.
During the exam, you will be tested on your ability to apply your knowledge to specific scenarios and prioritize tasks based on their urgency and importance. You will also need to consider the consequences of your decisions and actions, as this could impact the overall patient care outcome.
By utilizing critical thinking and decision-making skills during the nursing exam, you can demonstrate your ability to provide safe and effective patient care and increase your chances of passing the exam.
15. Don't forget to review the basics
