Steps to NCLEX exam registration
Here are the steps you need to take for the NCLEX exam registration:
1. Determine eligibility
Check if you meet the eligibility requirements set by the nursing regulatory body in the state or country where you plan to practice. Each jurisdiction may have specific criteria, such as educational qualifications and criminal background checks.
2. Submit an application
Fill out the NCLEX application form provided by the nursing regulatory body and sign up for NCLEX. The form will require personal information, educational background, and other relevant details. Be prepared to provide supporting documents, such as transcripts, proof of graduation from an accredited nursing program, and any required verification from nursing boards or schools.
3. Pay the application fee
There is usually an application fee associated with registering for the NCLEX-RN exam. The fee amount can vary depending on the jurisdiction. Follow the instructions on the website to make the payment. Some regulatory bodies may require additional fees for services like fingerprinting or criminal nursing background checks.
4. Receive Authorization to Test (ATT)
Once your application is processed and approved, you will receive Authorization to Test (ATT) from the nursing regulatory body. The ATT will provide instructions on how to schedule your exam.
5. Schedule the exam
Follow the instructions provided in the ATT to schedule your exam. The NCLEX-RN is administered by Pearson VUE, a testing company. You can schedule your exam through their website or by phone.
Scheduling your NCLEX exam
Once you have received your Authorization to Test (ATT), you have the opportunity to schedule your NCLEX exam. It is recommended to schedule as soon as you have your ATT since test centers tend to fill up quickly. Delaying your scheduling may limit your options for testing dates and may result in your ATT expiring before you can take the exam. For first-time test takers, an appointment will be offered within 30 days of the call or online attempt to schedule. If you are retaking the NCLEX exam, you will be offered an appointment within 45 days.
You can schedule your exam either through the NCLEX candidate website or by contacting Pearson VUE NCLEX candidate services. When scheduling online, you will need to provide your user ID and password that you used during the initial account creation. You will be prompted to select your preferred date, time, and testing center location. If you prefer to schedule over the phone, you will need to provide your ATT number and other necessary details to verify your identity. During the phone call, you can provide your preferred choices for testing dates, times, and locations.
In the event that your first-choice options for date, time, or location are unavailable, you will be offered the closest alternative available.
6. Pay the exam fee
Submit the required nursing license fees. There is an NCLEX exam fee that you must pay directly to Pearson VUE when scheduling your exam. The fee amount can vary, so check the current fee on their website.
7. Select a testing center and date
Choose a convenient testing center from the available options provided by Pearson VUE. Select a date and time that works for you.
8. Prepare for the exam
Use study materials, review nursing school courses, or practice exams to prepare for the NCLEX. There are various resources available, such as textbooks, online review programs, and mobile applications. Allocate sufficient time for studying and reviewing the content areas covered in the exam.

Who is eligible to take the NCLEX?
Can you take the NCLEX without going to nursing school? Unfortunately not. To be eligible to take the NCLEX, candidates must go through a series of steps. Attending a state-approved nursing program is a prerequisite, and a comprehensive list of acceptable nursing programs can typically be found on your state's Department of Education website. Following graduation from a nursing school program, candidates must fulfill two requirements. Firstly, they need to apply for licensure or registration at a Nursing Regulatory Body (NRB). Secondly, they must register for the NCLEX through Pearson VUE and pay the associated fees.
The NRB is responsible for verifying that candidates meet the eligibility nursing license requirements set by the board to become a registered RN (Registered Nurse) or LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse). These requirements may include being at least 18 years old, demonstrating good moral character, and meeting the minimum education criteria. Once the NRB confirms that all their requirements are fulfilled, they will grant the candidate eligibility to take the NCLEX. This eligibility is granted through Pearson VUE.
After completing all the necessary prerequisites for the NCLEX, candidates will receive an Authorization to Test (ATT) email, which allows them to schedule their examination.
