What is a military nurse?
A military nurse is a licensed nurse who offers medical assistance to individuals within the military. They have the ability to provide healthcare services in various settings, such as hospitals, military clinics, and military bases. These nurses are responsible for attending to the well-being of soldiers and their family members, both in the United States and across different international locations.
In addition to their regular responsibilities, military nurses may also be deployed to combat zones or global response centers. They perform similar tasks to civilian registered nurses, but they receive specialized training in procedures specifically designed for the care of military personnel, including the treatment of combat injuries and protocols for working in potentially dangerous environments.
What does a military nurse do?
The main duty of a military nurse is to provide healthcare to military personnel. Their tasks encompass wound management, prepping for surgeries, maintaining infection control, monitoring vital signs, and providing routine care.
Military nurses working on military bases or in Veterans Affairs hospitals also extend their treatment to include family members of the service members. In addition, some nurses may partake in humanitarian missions to assist international organizations in caring for underserved populations.
How to become a military nurse?
To become a military nurse, you generally need to follow these steps and meet military nurse requirements:
1- Earn a nursing degree
To initiate your journey as a military nurse, you can begin by enrolling in an accredited nursing school to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. BSN programs provide comprehensive education and training encompassing various facets of nursing. These programs cover topics such as nursing procedures, ethical considerations and incorporate clinical rotations to provide practical, hands-on experience. Excelling in your studies will also equip you with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully pass the nursing exam.
2- Take and pass the NCLEX
Before applying to work as a military nurse, it is necessary to obtain a nursing license. Obtaining your registered nursing license immediately after completing your undergraduate degree can enhance your prospects of securing employment more efficiently.
To acquire a nursing license, candidates must pass the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) and fulfill any state-specific prerequisites mandated by their location. Once you have obtained your nursing license, you can commence your nursing career in the field and begin preparing to apply for a position in the military.
To get ready for your NCLEX exam and need help, you can use an NCLEX study tool like Smart’n.
Smart’n is an innovative program that provides NextGen learning support for nursing students and helps them save time, stress less, and achieve success through personalized support.
Smart’n offers:
1- NextGen NCLEX preparation
This preparation includes 2500+ practice questions, next-generation (NGN) NCLEX-style case study practice, knowledge assessment, and progress tracking.
2- Scholarship grants for nursing students
The program aims to ease the financial burden of nursing students in two ways:
Every month, Smart'n gives a $300 grant to a member who responds to five questions in the grant application. They can participate in the program without having to pay any fees for membership. All that is required is for them to be in their final year of study at a licensed American nursing program.
It provides a $100 grant each week to a Smart'n member who is enrolled in a nursing program in North America. The goal of this scholarship is to assist nursing students in paying their educational costs, such as textbooks, lab fees, and other associated expenses.
3- Enlist or build civilian experience
Joining the military as a nurse soon after obtaining your nursing license enables you to initiate your journey towards becoming a military nurse early on and join your preferred branch of the military as a newly graduated nurse. Upon enlisting, you will be assigned to locations based on your preferences and the service's current requirements. Another alternative is to gain experience by working as a nurse in a non-military healthcare setting, such as a medical practice or hospital. This option allows you to enhance your nursing abilities and knowledge before entering the military, thus better preparing you for specialized training in military nursing.
4- Complete an application with a recruiter
Afterward, it is possible to establish contact with a military recruiter and complete an application to join a particular division. Opting to enlist immediately after obtaining your license may allow you to accomplish this stage sooner than an individual who initially works as a civilian nurse.
A recruiter can be of assistance by supplying details about their specific military branch and suggesting subsequent actions to be taken. Once you have made a decision regarding the branch you wish to join, you can finalize an application packet together with your recruiter and submit it for approval by the commissioning board.
5- Complete the application packet
Once you have fulfilled all the necessary qualifications, you can commence collaborating with your recruiter on the compilation of your application package. This procedure typically spans approximately one year, starting from the initial stages and culminating in the final endorsement by the commissioning board.
6- Complete an Officer Basic Leadership Course (BOLC)
If you are chosen, you will be obligated to undergo a 5-10 week course for commissioned officers. This training encompasses instruction on leadership abilities and an orientation to military life. Physical training will also be incorporated into this period. Once you successfully finish this mandatory military training, you will be designated as a military nurse.
Certifications for military nurses
The primary qualifications necessary include obtaining a Bachelor's degree and possessing an active RN license from a non-compact state. Additionally, certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is essential.
If your nursing specialty requires certifications in Acute Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), it is advisable to have these credentials as well. While any other specialized certifications relevant to your nursing field are advantageous, they are not obligatory (e.g., CCRN).
Currently, there is no specific certification exclusively for military nurses. However, it is crucial to bear in mind that the military has its own distinct set of requirements concerning the military aspect of the profession.
Salary and job outlook for military nurses
Based on data from Indeed, the average annual salary for registered nurses nationwide is $93,676 . However, the compensation for military nurses is determined by factors such as rank, duty locations, and length of service. Military nurses also receive additional benefits beyond their salaries, including medical insurance, retirement plans, and housing allowances.
Conclusion
In conclusion, becoming a military nurse in 2023 requires careful planning, dedication, and meeting specific qualifications. From connecting with a military recruiter to completing the application process, aspiring military nurses must navigate a series of steps to join a specific branch. While the salary range for military nurses varies depending on factors such as education level, rank, and certifications, it offers competitive compensation and attractive benefits beyond just the salary.
