Steps to becoming a registered nurse
Becoming a registered nurse involves several important steps. Here are the general steps to follow:
1- Research and explore the nursing profession
Begin by familiarizing yourself with the nursing profession, its responsibilities, and the various career opportunities available. Research different nursing specialties and assess your interests and goals within the field.
Then decide if this career is right for you. Working as a registered nurse entails significant responsibility. Regardless of your workplace or chosen nursing position, you will interact closely with patients.
Possessing qualities such as responsiveness, approachability, and excellent interpersonal skills is crucial. Being able to think quickly and adapt to various situations is also essential in this profession.
2- Complete your prerequisites
In order to be eligible for a nursing program, you will typically need to have a high school diploma or GED. The specific requirements for admission may vary among schools. Some institutions may accept students with a minimum GPA of 2.5, while others may require a GPA of 3.0 or higher. It is important to note that more competitive nursing programs often have higher GPA requirements.
3- Choose a nursing program
To work as a registered nurse, individuals must hold either an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). ADN programs typically have a shorter duration of about two years, allowing nurses to enter the workforce sooner and at a lower cost. While many employers prefer candidates with a BSN, pursuing an ADN can be a viable pathway to begin a nursing career, as it offers a quicker and more affordable education.
On the other hand, completing a BSN program generally takes around four years and involves higher costs. However, a BSN provides a more comprehensive education that is highly desired by employers. When deciding between ADN and BSN programs, it is important to consider your personal career aspirations, time commitment, and financial situation. It is also worth noting that you can opt to earn an ADN first and then pursue a BSN at a later stage.
Regardless of the degree program you choose, ensure that it is accredited by either the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Accreditation ensures that the program meets established quality standards and will be recognized by employers and licensing boards.
4- Apply to nursing programs
Submit applications to the nursing programs of your choice. Consider factors such as program reputation, accreditation, curriculum, and clinical opportunities when making your selections. Some programs may require an entrance exam, such as the TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills), so be prepared for any additional requirements.
5- Complete required clinical training
Clinical training is an integral part of all nursing programs and involves hands-on practice with real patients. It is a mandatory component of the curriculum and essential for graduation. During clinical experiences, students have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in a real healthcare setting, working directly with patients under the supervision of experienced healthcare professionals.
6- Obtain licensure
Regardless of the degree path you select, both ADN and BSN programs encompass a wide range of subjects essential to nursing practice. These subjects typically include anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology, and more.
Accredited ADN and BSN programs are designed to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to successfully pass the NCLEX-RN examination, the licensure exam for registered nurses.
After completing your nursing education, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). This standardized exam measures your competence to practice safely and effectively as an entry-level registered nurse. Prepare for the NCLEX-RN by utilizing study resources and practice exams.
If you want to prepare for your NCLEX exam and get your nursing license exam, take advantage of a quality NCLEX study tool like Smart’n.
Smart'n is a platform designed to support nursing students in their studies by providing access to a wide range of practice questions, rationales, and assessments.
With over 2,500 practice questions and 60+ hours of NGN NCLEX-style nursing case studies available on Smart'n, students can find NextGen questions and case studies that are concise and categorized by topic. This makes it easier to focus on specific areas of nursing practice, such as respiratory, cardiac, mental health, neurological, and more.
7- Apply for state licensure
Once you pass the NCLEX-RN, you will need to apply for licensure with the nursing board in the state where you intend to practice. The specific requirements for licensure vary by state, so familiarize yourself with the process and submit the necessary documentation and fees.
8- Pursue further education or specialization (optional)
After becoming a registered nurse, you may choose to pursue advanced degrees or certifications to specialize in a particular area of nursing, such as pediatric care, critical care, or mental health. Advanced education can expand your career opportunities and earning potential.
Remember that the steps outlined above and the requirements to become a registered nurse
are general guidelines, and it's essential to research and verify the specific requirements and processes in your country or state. The nursing profession offers a rewarding career path with opportunities for growth and making a meaningful impact on the lives of others.
Skills required of a registered nurse
1- Communication skills
Developing a well-rounded skill set is crucial for achieving success as a registered nurse. Below are some valuable skills that can benefit those in the nursing profession:
Effective communication skills are vital for registered nurses as they interact with various individuals, including doctors, surgeons, fellow nurses, patients, and their families. It is essential for RNs to possess exceptional communication abilities. Given that registered nurses often deal with vulnerable and unwell individuals, they must demonstrate patience and actively listen to patients and colleagues. Developing clear and articulate communication skills, providing and receiving feedback, and maintaining positive relationships can enhance a nurse's communication prowess.
2- Organisational skills
Organizational skills are highly valued in nursing as registered nurses oversee multiple aspects of a hospital ward or clinical setting. They often supervise enrolled nurses and nursing assistants and are responsible for ensuring the efficient functioning of the healthcare environment. To maintain organization, registered nurses rely on delegation and effective planning. RNs can effectively manage their responsibilities and contribute to a smoothly running clinical environment by delegating tasks appropriately and creating well-thought-out plans.
3- Being detail-orientated
Attention to detail is a critical attribute for registered nurses. Given their involvement in medication administration and care planning for patients, RNs must be meticulous in their work, leaving minimal room for error. Attention to detail is essential as it helps streamline processes in a clinical setting, saving time and resources. Establishing a routine, taking appropriate breaks, and maintaining focus contribute to cultivating strong attention to detail.
4- Teamwork skills
Collaborative skills are crucial for registered nurses as they collaborate with diverse patients and colleagues. A work environment characterized by strong teamwork skills fosters a healthy and highly productive atmosphere. Developing effective communication and empathy skills can enhance the ability to work well in a team.
5- Conflict resolution skills
Conflict resolution skills are essential for registered nurses as they may encounter disputes among staff members or between patients and staff. Conflicts can arise in medical clinics or hospitals, such as issues related to waiting times. Registered nurses often play a role in mediating such situations and determining the most appropriate course of action for resolution. Developing strong conflict resolution skills enables RNs to effectively navigate challenging interpersonal dynamics and promote positive outcomes.
6- Leadership skills
The role of a registered nurse tends to require working with lots of patients in a demanding environment. Registered nurses often take on a leadership role in a clinical setting. Strategic thinking and being dependable can help in managing many situations. Being an approachable and productive leader can contribute to successful workplace culture.
Registered nurse salary and job outlook
Registered nurses in the United States earn a salary that exceeds the national average and can anticipate a positive job outlook in the upcoming years.
Based on data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in May 2021, the median annual pay for registered nurses was $77,600. This figure comfortably surpasses the median salary for all occupations in the country, which stood at $45,760 during the same period [3].
Similar to other healthcare professions, registered nurses can expect a notable increase in job opportunities over the next decade. The US BLS projects a six percent growth in job openings for RNs between 2021 and 2031, translating to approximately 203,200 new job opportunities each year.
Where do registered nurses work?
Nursing students can discover job opportunities through various channels, including their educational institutions, hospitals, medical offices, popular job boards, and the career centers provided by the American Nurses Association.
The salary of registered nurses can vary based on factors such as their degree, specialization, and place of work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for RNs is $82,750. Many registered nurses are employed in hospitals, physician offices, nursing facilities, and outpatient care centers. Notably, RNs working in outpatient care centers earn an average salary of $93,070, which exceeds the national average.
In hospital settings, RNs fulfill vital roles in areas such as the operating room, intensive care unit, and neonatal units. Their responsibilities include administering medications, conducting patient assessments, establishing care priorities, and intervening in emergencies to save lives.
Within nursing and residential care facilities, RNs work in day and night shifts, providing guidance to patients and their families, implementing infection-control policies, administering medications and treatments, coordinating care plans, and monitoring residents.
RNs in outpatient care centers collaborate closely with doctors and other healthcare professionals. They collect healthcare data for patients, administer medications, and monitor patients' conditions.

Becoming a registered nurse offers a range of advantages beyond a higher salary and a sought-after skill set. Here are some additional benefits that come with entering this compassionate and in-demand profession:

The demand for nurses remains consistently high, ensuring a stable and secure career path. Hospitals and clinics are continually seeking qualified nurses, and this need is expected to grow in the future.

If you possess strong interpersonal skills and enjoy connecting with others, nursing allows you to make a positive difference in the lives of patients through meaningful interactions on a daily basis.
