Who is a nurse practitioner?
Before diving into the answer to “How long does it take to become a nurse practitioner?” it's essential to understand the responsibilities and duties of a nurse practitioner.
Nurse practitioners are highly skilled healthcare professionals with a master's degree or higher in nursing. They work closely with physicians and other healthcare providers to deliver comprehensive care to patients.
Some of the key responsibilities of nurse practitioners include diagnosing health problems, prescribing medications (in certain states), ordering and analyzing diagnostic tests, counseling patients, and educating individuals on health-related issues and lifestyle changes.
Educational requirements for nurse practitioners
Understanding how long it takes to become a nurse practitioner requires knowing that the job needs a solid educational foundation and a commitment to lifelong learning.
The NP school length depends on different factors for each step of your journey. The journey typically begins with obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, followed by licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN), and further specialization through a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree.
- BSN degree
To start your path toward becoming a nurse practitioner, you will need to complete a BSN nursing program. This undergraduate program typically takes around four years to complete, although some accelerated programs may offer a faster route.
During the BSN program, students acquire a solid foundation in nursing principles, clinical skills, and healthcare sciences.
- Licensure as an RN
After completing the BSN program, aspiring nurse practitioners must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) to become licensed as an RN.
This examination ensures that graduates have the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective patient care. The licensing requirements may vary slightly from state to state, so it's essential to check the specific requirements of the state where you intend to practice.
Having access to practice questions and different types of nursing case studies will help you pass NCLEX easier. Smart’n, with over 2,500 practice questions with rationals and 60+ hours of NGN NCLEX-style nursing case studies will help you a lot.

The nurse practitioner schooling length depends on the program, the nursing school, and your chosen specialization. The nurse practitioner schooling years for getting an MSN nursing degree can take anywhere from two to three years to complete.
- Specialization and certification
During the MSN program, aspiring nurse practitioners have the opportunity to choose a specialization based on their career goals and interests. Common specializations include Family Nurse Practitioner, Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, and Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, among others.
After completing the MSN program, individuals can pursue certification in their chosen specialization through organizations such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB).
- Clinical experience and preceptorship
Clinical experience is a vital component of the nurse practitioner's educational journey. During the MSN program, students participate in supervised clinical rotations in various healthcare settings. These rotations provide hands-on experience and the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world patient care scenarios.
Additionally, many programs require students to complete a preceptorship, where they work closely with an experienced nurse practitioner to further refine their skills and competencies.
- DNP degree
While an MSN degree is currently the minimum requirement for nurse practitioner practice, the nursing profession is moving toward the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) as the terminal degree, which takes about two to four years.
The DNP program focuses on advanced clinical practice, leadership, research, and evidence-based practice.
Some individuals may choose to pursue a DNP degree directly after obtaining a BSN, while others may opt to pursue it later in their careers to enhance their knowledge and expertise.
The time frame for becoming a nurse practitioner
To answer how long it takes to become a nurse practitioner, we should mention that the whole process can vary depending on several factors, including the individual's educational path, the chosen specialization, and whether they pursue additional advanced degrees.
